Despite a drop in total ratings, showrunner Angela Kang stated on October 5, 2019, at New York Comic-Con that The Walking Dead had been renewed for a second season, ushering us back into the zombie apocalypse for the 11th year.
Sarah Barnett, former head of AMC networks entertainment group and AMC studios, remarked, “The Walking Dead came out of the gate 10 years ago as a genre program with all the character depth of a top-tier prestige drama.”
“And now, ten years later, this phenomena is blooming artistically, with reviewers and audiences embracing its reset, headed by the great Angela Kang and driven by one of television’s most consistently excellent groups.”
“We have a lot more thrilling stories to tell on TWD, and then this end will be the start of more Walking Dead – fresh new stories and characters, familiar faces and locations, new voices, and new mythologies,” Scott Gimple, The Walking Dead’s chief content officer, stated. “This will be a big conclusion, with fresh premieres following. We are in the midst of evolution. The Walking Dead is still alive and well.”

What does Will happen in Season 11 of the Walking Dead?
“11B is going to have a distinct tone from 11A, which is not unusual for us in a season… there’s going to be a really exciting thriller vibe to the B block that we’ve been loving writing,” Kang stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“I don’t want to give anything away… but another group will surprise our people.” With our characters, we’ll get to know the Commonwealth a little better. And there are specific ways that this plays out, as well as several new people that we will meet.”
“Many of our heroes [are] fighting imminent hellfire under Reaper attack, while others combat Mother Nature’s torrential wrath in Alexandria,” according to the official summary. Everyone’s world is practically collapsing around them.
“In the meantime, life in the Commonwealth isn’t quite as pleasant as it appears. Hope will be rekindled for some. Others will be pushed over their breaking point. One thing is unmistakable: lives are on the line, and each action has the potential to radically alter a person’s future, their prospects of survival, and the state of their community.”
“When we start [the final season], we’re rockin’ and rolling, we’re back to being big and scope-y,” Kang told TVLine. There’ll be a sense that things are just ripping along for the first block, and then we’ll go for some different tonal things than we’re used to on the show, which should be entertaining for the audience.”
“As we encounter more than one type of new community, each narrative will have its vibe,” she continued. As a result, some of them may venture into genres that have yet to be covered on the show.
“I hope that even in the last season, we’ll feel like we’re constantly discovering new things, but also like we’re just moving along.”
Following the mid-season finale in October, she talked more about the second half of Season 11, notably the ongoing tensions between Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).
“We were just extremely interested in exploring the tale of Maggie and Negan from the beginning of the season,” Kang told Deadline. “Especially when you have two people with the kind of history that they do.”
“When you’re forced to work with someone you don’t completely trust, it makes for fascinating encounters.” I just think it provides us different story-telling chances, and I think Negan… he’s a character that I’ve enjoyed writing for, and Jeffrey does an incredible job with him. He’s simply one of the individuals you’ve met along his path, but Maggie has changed as well.”
With Judith and Gracie stranded in a flooded cellar and Carol, Aaron, and Connie stuck in a storm, the final part of the final season is full of cliffhangers to be addressed. Because of Covid-19 constraints, it isn’t even the ending to season 11A that Kang had planned, as she explained to Insider in October.
“For episode eight, we had a completely different type of episode planned, and we had to get pragmatic about what we could accomplish in the storyline,” she explained. “So it’s simply been a series of decisions like that, presumably unnoticeable to the viewer if they don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.”
“It’s been a unique experience for us.” We need to rethink our strategy. To mask our constraints, we must use different sites… It’s for a good reason, so we just accept it and move on because safety comes first.”
Kang also teased what fans may expect from season 11’s final episodes.
“There will be a few twists and turns, as well as some surprises, and we always aim to make it terrifying.” As we continue to build towards a conclusion, maybe all of it will be available to everyone.”
“What I’ll say is that there are characters like Daryl who find themselves in situations that are vastly different from anything they’ve experienced before,” Kang added.
“So they’re navigating them in ways that can be difficult for their characters, because they feel like they know how the world works or what their place in their group is, and they’re having to go beyond their circle.”
“In a broad sense, I believe that’s what a lot of our characters are struggling with in various ways. Then there are the scares and all the other wonderful things we get to perform in our show.”
Whatever occurs in the second half of the season, expect a dramatic tone shift.
“We went in one path for the first ten episodes, largely with Maggie’s story and us as a group trying to figure out what was going on. And then we did a one-eighty, and it’s all of a sudden like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory “Norman Reedus was quoted as saying (via ComicBook).
“Right now, we’re all doing The Exorcist, and our heads are all whirling in a circle. Right now, we’re all Linda Blair. It’s crazy how things can go from a black-and-white western to a technicolor Willy Wonka film.”
“To be honest, [Daryl] protects the kids a lot, and…he protects Maggie a lot,” he added. “At the start of the season, Maggie is going through a significant thing, and he takes it upon himself to keep an eye on her and be a part of that trip.”
Daryl’s story, according to the actor, is “becomes a broader conflict, which then becomes something quite new. But I believe he is looking out for people and protecting them, but he is also protecting [their home] alongside everyone else.”
What’s Going on With the Walking Dead Spinoffs?
World Beyond and Fear the Walking Dead already exist, and a Daryl and Carol spinoff, as well as a Rick Grimes film with Michonne, have been confirmed.
Gimple told Collider, “We’re going to be telling storylines with Michonne again.”
“In many respects, the end of her series was the beginning of the story.”
“Movies take a little longer, and we’re experimenting with it in all kinds of ways,” Gimple explained. “Then the epidemic struck, providing us with the chance or necessity to do so.”
“That’s something we’re still doing.” Andy [Andrew Lincoln] is heavily involved with the project. [Creator Robert Kirkman] is heavily involved with the project. It’s moving forward. It’s only that our current circumstances have provided us with some extra time, which we appear to require regardless. We’re determined to get it properly.”
In addition, Gimple and AMC are developing a new anthology spin-off series, Tales of the Walking Dead, which will premiere next year.
“More than any other series in the Walking Dead Universe, this one is built on new voices, viewpoints, and ideas, bringing to life stories unlike any we’ve told before,” Gimple stated.
