Summary of Swat Season 5
Hondo returns from his Mexican vacation to find that the department has reinstated 20 more squads. Hicks, on the other hand, makes it clear that neither Hondo nor Deacon will serve as the team’s captain (taking the 20-David call-sign). They’re replacing the squad’s leader with a fresh hire.
A heist occurs, and a gunfight ensues between private security and the robbers. A hostage situation occurs when the robbers decide to leave one of themselves behind. When the squad arrives, the new team captain is met with a cool reception at best (especially from Luca).
27-David is Hondo’s new call sign. Captured criminals give them a few of leads, so Deacon goes after him with the new team commander. Perhaps the heist was a set-up for a more serious crime, like a mass shooting.
Hondo and Sanchez are at odds on the best way to approach a potential target (which gets awkward). The thief was actually the caretaker of the suspect, who was in a wheelchair. Hondo remains in Black Betty’s care, and the team functions just well in his absence. The caretaker doesn’t speak, but her phone records reveal that she is. While pursuing a lead, Street and Alonso have a conversation regarding their relationship.
They roll out when they learn that the crew is pursuing a DEA evidence warehouse, but it’s too late. Running through some underground passages, the group had already begun their escape. Fortunately, they all get caught up.
For the time being, Street and Alonso resolve to stick together and not get romantically involved, while a SWAT cadet thanks Hondo for his actions, stating that Hondo was one of the primary motivations for joining the force in the first place.
It is revealed that Sanchez’s one and only duty (assigned to him by the police commission) is to convince Hondo that he should resign.
