Episode Review: Star vs the Forces of Evil Season 4 Episode 9: Everything You Need To Know

After a 22-minute storyline that confused its fans, Star vs the Forces of Evil goes back to its normal two-segment format. Star and her friends aren’t as important as they used to be in this episode. Instead, the segments focus on a few people we haven’t seen in a while.

When Ludo doesn’t get another magical item, he doesn’t know what to do with himself. Even so, his younger brother Dennis tries to help him out a little bit. By bringing up things from Ludo’s past that were bad.

There is a very interesting alternate-dimension version of the Bon-Bon the Birthday Clown episode in this episode. For a few minutes, anyway.

Ludo is in a bad mood, and Dennis is trying to get him out of it. I don’t agree with Dennis’ methods for getting Ludo back to his old ways, though. Dennis doesn’t seem to be trying to help Ludo as much as he is “letting” him. You get to see some of Ludo’s monster henchmen again (some of whom I thought were killed in the Season 1 finale!).

I think the part of the storey that surprised me was when Ludo did something that really showed how much he cared about Dennis. We haven’t seen anything like this from Ludo before about his family, and it was the thing that saved the storey for me.

Some of the Newman population has come to live near Moon Butterfly and her husband River. Moon gets annoyed when they can’t agree on simple things like where to go for a walk. In the ruins of Butterfly Castle, she finds some things that she didn’t expect to find.

In Moon’s storey, we get to see a lot of great moody moments as she walks around the castle. There is a sense that she is going through the ruins of her old life and trying to figure out what to do next. When she decides what to do in the future, it will be interesting to see if she will stay true to her beliefs.

As with Moon’s previous appearance, the show’s writers try to get humour out of the helplessness of the people. It still doesn’t make sense to me. Mina Loveberry also makes an appearance that isn’t what she was expecting to do. A lot of the time, Mina’s appearances have been as annoying as most of Ponyhead’s.

This may be one of the few times where a segment has her stop being over-the-top long enough to be interesting…and make us realise that she may now be one of the most dangerous people on Mewni. When we saw how a revelation came back to haunt us, it was the most interesting part.

Disney Press has a lot of Star-themed books and some parts of this storey tie into them. I can just imagine how surprised some of the fans will be when they hear about Mewni’s history in this storey.

It looks like this episode shows that Ludo can’t get away from his past, but Moon is trying to move on from her own. People wonder if this is the last we see of the two stories (most notably Ludo).

Next, we get to see some of the Mewnian sport Cornball in the episode of the same name. He also tries to teach Meteora a thing or two in Meteora’s Lesson. The next review will be up soon. See you then.
