There will be spoilers in this recap of the season finale episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, “How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?” Proceed at your own risk.
It’s the time! The season finale of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is one of the best we’ve seen so far. Finally, we saw Midge and Lenny having sex. Midge and Lenny have a natural, electric chemistry that’s partly because they’re both great actors.
The Powers That Be also does a great job of building up to this moment. As soon as we saw the first episode, we saw the beginnings of this methodically-laid path. The slow burn was worth the wait.
How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall? is an amazing movie, and if it doesn’t win any awards next year, I’m going to get angry. The way I see it, he’s the real deal, as far as I can tell. Finally, Lenny tells Midge that she shouldn’t break his heart. You could feel it, too.
“How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?” Let’s Get to It Now.
Our show starts with Midge (Rachel Brosnahan), Abe (Tony Shalhoub), and Rose (Marin Hinkle) going to the hospital, where they see Joel (Michael Zegen) and Shirley (Caroline Aaron) over an unconscious Moishe (Kevin Pollak). Even though Moishe’s condition is unknown at this point, doctors keep coming and going with no real news. They say he had a heart attack.
The two people are outside Moishe’s room, and they wonder if they played a role in his heart attack. Midge did not say that she was going to be late on the rent. Joel said that he had a relationship with an Asian woman. In the end, we’re still living in the 1960s.
Shirley can stay with Abe and Rose while Moishe is in the hospital. Shirley is in the living room with Abe, and she asks him if he has his funeral planned. He thinks Rose will die first. Is someone going to write his obit? Shirley also says that Moishe wants the person who wrote Albert Einstein’s obituary to write his.
Caroline Aaron does a great job as Shirley in this scene. She gives an emotional and visceral performance. When Susie’s management company gets a lot of calls, Dinah (Alfie Fuller) asks a woman in the next building for help. James (Jay Will) is Susie’s new client.
Alfie tries to get to know him, but the other person doesn’t want to do that. Asked Susie if she could get someone to sub for Midge at the strip club. Susie wants to pass the job on to James, but he doesn’t want to do it.
In the next step, Abe calls the New York Times writer who wrote Einstein’s obituary and begs him to write the obituary for Moishe as well. The assistant to Abe is typing very quickly in the background. As a result, Abe has his boss call the man back and get him to call back.
Another time, rejection isn’t far away, and it will happen again. Later, Midge and Joel meet again outside of Moishe’s hospital room. Mei and Shirley play a very competitive game of Mahjong. Her friend Mei is boyfriend Joel’s girlfriend. Shirley does not know this.
Midge discusses parental specifics with Mei, i.e., what will her kids call Mei, will Ethan and Esther have bath time at Mei’s home, etc. This conversation is one of those scenarios wherein both parties aren’t on the same wavelength. Midge doesn’t realize that Joel and Mei haven’t broached the topic of marriage or Mei becoming a stepmother. Uh oh. I love Midge, but she tends to word vomit without thinking of the repercussions.
Boise (Santino Fontana) calls Midge at the hospital and implores her to return to the strip club for one set. Midge enlisted the aid of two of the strippers to deliver her material, but they don’t have a knack for comedic timing.
Then, Midge does as she’s bid and performs standup at the club to raucous cheers. She gives a poignant, heartstring-tugging monologue about Moishe’s health scare, and this speech should be Brosnahan’s Emmy submission. That or the season premiere’s meltdown scene regarding Shy Baldwin.
After Midge’s set, Lenny Bruce (Kirby) makes his usual grand entrance. He informs Midge about a great Tony Bennett gig at the Copacabana. However, it’s not a headlining spot. Still, it’s Tony who’s f—-ing Bennett!
Suddenly, Midge and Lenny hear a lot of noise in the strip club. The police come in and raid the place. People who work for the law found out about an illegal business that was trying to stay out of the public eye. Everyone should run in Boise.
Midge and Lenny go to the hotel room of Lenny, where they laugh and drink. Their relationship is filled with electricity. Midge talks about her fancy underwear, which makes Lenny want to see them. Midge finally agrees to follow her heart, but only if Lenny remembers that she’s “very, very funny.”
Afterward, Lenny and Midge have sex. They said they would laugh all the time. It’s a lot of fun, people. Because we won, I’m on cloud nine.
Our lovers spend a passionate night together. In Lenny’s bathroom the next day, Midge finds a bag full of hard drugs, which is likely heroin. Let me tell you what happened when I saw Midge looking at my drug paraphernalia. I told her that I was OK, and she said that she thought I was.
He is woken up by a friend at work. She tells him it’s important that he head over to the hospital right away. Abe spent all night with Imogene writing Moishe’s obituary, so he takes that with him when he leaves.
Moishe is awake and alert as if he had never had a heart attack. Abe finds him. Everybody’s faces start to look happy. This line from the book: “Abe has written an obituary for my dear friend Moishe. I want him to read it for me.” After Abe is done, Moishe’s eyes are filled with tears. There is a moment when Abe is on the verge of crying as well. This makes me feel a lot of different things. Shalhoub and Pollak are great.
After that, Midge goes to Susie and tells her the good news about Moishe. Susie is told by a woman in the next building that a representative for Tony Bennett is calling Midge and wants to meet with her. Lenny said good things about Midge, the woman he loved. However, Midge doesn’t want to do it because it’s the first act. She wants to be a big star. So, Susie doesn’t want to go, much to her dismay.
Midge asks Susie to watch Frank and Nicky. As long as she gave them money, they were good at what they did for her business. Mobsters always want something in return. It’s a risky game Susie is taking part in. They also took her away at one point. Even though Midge wants Susie to listen, she doesn’t. When Susie says this, it’s a straw-breaking moment for her.

When Moishe is in the living room, Shirley, Abe, Rose, and Joel help him get there. With his son, Moishe clears things up. He tells Joel that the news about Mei didn’t cause his heart attack. Abe kisses his wife passionately and gives her a beautiful rose-themed notepad.
New York matchmakers get gifts from Rose that are very special. She says, “I will not stop,” and the gifts are very unique. “Matchmaker” from Fiddler on the Roof plays, and it’s the best song in the show.
In the next part, Lenny performs his standup at Carnegie Hall, and it’s a hit. He is found by Midge after the show when he is in the crowd. There, she can see the magic for herself.
Then, Lenny scolds Midge for not taking the Tony Bennett gig after he went out on a limb for her. He tells her that making it in show business takes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. It takes a lot of hard work and small jobs to get to the top.
However, Midge says she’s going to do things her way, and there will be no more opening acts. She wants the freedom to say what she thinks. In the movie, Midge talks about how Lenny can speak freely now. Lenny says he’s always afraid of being arrested now. Not at all. Lenny wants to play in places like Carnegie Hall.

She will break Lenny’s heart if Midge doesn’t work and get her act together. A punch to the gut. She killed it.
After Lenny leaves, Midge leaves Carnegie Hall to a blizzard in New York City. She loses her umbrella and hat to the snowy wind as she walks by a car with passengers who are yelling for John F. Kennedy.
Midge sees a huge billboard for Gordon Ford’s show right in front of her. Susie said earlier that she tried to get Midge on Gordon’s talk show as she did for Sophie Lennon. A lightbulb goes off in Midge’s head.
I hope this doesn’t mean the end for Lenny and Midge, but it could if the last season jumps back in time. Lenny’s dangers might make Midge think twice about their future together. If The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel doesn’t follow in real life, I hope the show gives him a happy end both on-screen and in real life.
Next season, it will be interesting to see how Midge and Susie are different. I think the matchmakers in New York City won’t go down without a fight. Joel and Mei’s future is hanging by a thread right now. Mei is pregnant, but Shirley doesn’t know about it. Moishe knows about it. Mei also doesn’t seem ready for marriage, mostly because she’s studying to be a doctor. To see where their storyline takes us, I’m excited to find out!
Season 4 messed up Midge a little, and we saw her flounder as she tried to figure out where she fit in the comedy world. Finally, Lenny tells her that she should not put him on a pedestal as a comedy god. I love that last scene. When people talk about him, they think of him as a person who entertains for a living. To be able to say what she wants, Midge must work hard.
All in all, I think Season 4 is great for me, both in terms of characters and plot. With everything from Susie starting a management business to Midge and Lenny making progress in their relationship, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has all the things we’ve come to love about this show.
