If you’ve been watching Netflix for a few years now, you’ve seen the company take a very risky approach to make new shows and movies. A few big hits, like House of Cards and Stranger Things, have clearly been made by this company. But it hasn’t always been a hit. Hemlock Grove and Gypsy are two examples.
In order to protect itself from this risk, the streamer has bought unknown gems off the international market and polished them for the US market. These efforts have set Netflix apart from the rest of the TV industry, and they’ve led to great shows like Dark, Money Heist, and The Rain (Denmark).
Ares is a dark Dutch horror show that Netflix released in the early days of 2020. It was a surprise hit for the company. Ares is a movie about a first-year medical student named Rosa (Jade Olieberg) who is invited to join a mysterious secret society that has been around since the Dutch Golden Age.
When she gets inside, she sees things she’s never seen before because of the group’s nefarious and supernatural nature. Ares made its Netflix debut back in January, and it quickly became a hit with both horror fans and people who didn’t know what they were in for. Many people said it was too scary to finish.
The show is still one of the most talked-about originals of this year, which has been plagued by pandemics. That makes Ares fans wonder if Netflix will go ahead and make another season of spine-chilling Ares.

Is There Going to Be a Second Season of Ares on Netflix Soon?
When Netflix released Ares, there was a big wave of mostly positive reviews. It looked like the streaming service would quickly approve a second season. There are usually two ways Netflix bosses make second-season announcements: They can either make the decision to make season 2 before the first one even airs, which is rare, or they can wait a few months to figure out how much it will cost to make season 2.
They didn’t take the first step with Ares, or we would have already told you when the new season will start. Over six months have passed since the first season of the show came out, but there hasn’t been any news about a second season. We’re starting to think that Ares might not be done after all.
There is still hope, though. It’s safe to say Netflix isn’t renewing certain shows until they’re 100% sure it’s safe for the crews to get back to work. This is especially true for shows that were filmed in Europe. However, the second season of Ares is still very likely, even though there hasn’t been a public announcement about it. Ares could be back on Netflix in late 2021, so keep an eye out for new episodes.

Who Will Play Ares in Season 2?
If and when Netflix makes season 2 of Ares happen, we know a little more about who will be back. It was mostly Rosa’s story in the first season of the show. Carmen, Jacob, Fleur, and Roderick were some of her new school friends, as were Carmen, Lisa Smit, and Tobias Kersloot (Robin Boissevain).
Most of that crew made it through the dangerous season 1 storyline, which was topped off by some real bloodletting in the last episode. If there is a second season of Ares, Jadie Olieberg is likely to be back as Rosa. Likewise, at least some of her core group should join her. That said, Tobias Kersloot’s Jacob will not be one of them.
He died in the show’s finale in a very sad way. Carmen’s father, Maurits Zwanenberg, also killed himself after seeing Rosa’s powerful transformation at the end of season 1. Maurits Zwanenberg was also an elder in the Ares family.
As we don’t know what will happen to Rosa in season 2, we can’t say for sure which original Ares characters will be back for a new season, or how many new characters might show up for any spooky season 2 events. We hope Dennis Rudge, who plays Rosa’s father Wendel, gets more screen time in season 2. He was one of the lesser-known stars of the first season.

Second Season: What Will Happen?
What we know for sure is that we don’t know where this crazy story will go next after that no-holds-barred season 1 finale. Based on the many details that were revealed in the last 15 to 20 minutes of season 1, we might have an idea of what might happen.
Any second season of Ares will have to look at Rosa’s new role as the Ares leader. As a reminder, Rosa was chosen by Ares’ top dog, Mauritz, to lead the group in the finale. In order to do so, she had to kill a willing-to-die Jacob.
Rosa’s rise to the presidency of Ares also gave her access to the mysterious basement, where we found that the beast we’ve come to know and fear as Beal doesn’t exist. In the end, Rosa found a dark pool of black ooze that was full of the essence of society’s shameful actions over the years.
To avoid giving her own shame to the ooze, Rosa dives right in for a quick tour of Ares’ dark history. We learn that their shameful slave-trading roots are the first thing we learn about. Sooty ooze covers her and she emerges. She uses her new powers of influence to make people in her society kill each other off.
If you think about season two of Ares, you might think that Rosa will be struggling with both her new powers and her new position in life. But because of all the changes that happened in season one, it’s almost impossible to predict what those struggles will look like. Let’s just hope Netflix gives us a second chance to meet the secret group of Dutch horrors.
