As the weather gets colder and colder, there’s nothing better than curling up with a good thriller. The Girl from Oslo, a Norwegian historical drama that doesn’t hold back in any way, is the perfect show to watch if you’d rather stay inside all day.

You’ll wonder if this gripping series was all based on true events after you’ve seen it—or before, or even during—and we have some answers. As Pia and her two friends are kidnapped by ISIS operatives, the events of The Girl From Oslo take place in both Norway and Israel.

Is the Girl From Oslo Is Based on True Story?

As much as The Girl From Oslo is inspired by actual events, it is mostly made up of fictionalized dramatizations that give the story a more grounded feel. Despite the fact that the characters in the show aren’t based on real people (such as Bill Clinton’s opening voice over about the Oslo Accords in 1993), the series does have some real-world elements to it.

Though The Girl from Oslo isn’t officially based on this news story, the series’ plot is very similar to this one.

The Girl From Oslo Season 2’s Storylines

Israelis Nadav and Noa Salem, along with Norwegian Pia Bakke, are kidnapped in the first scene of the film. The three of them are abducted while vacationing in Egypt. To bring her daughter back from the brink of death, Pia’s mother employs a variety of political and personal ploys in order to do so.

The kidnappers have imposed two conditions. Pia Bakke’s father Karl Bakke, who is in Norway, must work to retry a terrorist named Abu Salem, who has been released from prison in Oslo. The second condition is that 12 more political prisoners be released in exchange for the hostages.

Arik Shor, the Israeli minister in charge of the rescue operations, is in close contact with Pia’s mother, Alex, who is in Israel. Arik’s family and job are dependent on the safe return of the hostages, so we won’t go into too much detail here.

His rescue attempt, which ultimately fails, even includes recruiting a former army buddy turned mercenary named Grant. Arik is questioned at some point during the investigation into who was behind the operation. Being reminded of our mother’s warning about trusting men with attractive smiles while watching that scene brings back memories for many of us.
