Ben Foster, an American actor, is deserving of a place on any list of Hollywood’s most underappreciated actors. He’s a pleasant and often surprising addition to just about any film he appears in, including excellent turns in films like “Alpha Dog,” “Hell or High Water,” and “Leave No Trace.”
Soon, though, you’ll be able to see him in the lead part of an upcoming HBO film that promises to be a gripping depiction of a very terrible tragedy. Foster is starring opposite Barry Levinson, the acclaimed director behind classics like “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Rain Man,” and “Sleepers,” in a new historical drama titled “The Survivor,” in what may be his most challenging role to date.
The film is a reunion for the two, who previously worked together on Levinson’s 1999 film “Liberty Heights,” which made a stir after it’s screening at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2021. “The Survivor” is based on the true story of boxer Harry Haft (Foster), who fought a horrific quest of survival during World War II.
So, what’s the story behind “The Survivor,” who’ll be joining Foster in the cast, and when will we be able to see this much-anticipated biopic? We’ve done our homework and put together everything we know about “The Survivor” so far.

What Is the Survivor Storyline?
“The Survivor,” based on Alan Haft’s book “Harry Haft: Survivor of Auschwitz, Challenger of Rocky Marciano,” was adapted by Justine Juel Gilmer, who also wrote episodes of “The 100” and Amazon Prime Video’s fantasy series “The Wheel of Time” (per Deadline).

The video chronicles the extraordinary account of Haft’s experience as a prisoner in Auschwitz, where his talent as a fighter was used by his captors, who placed him against other prisoners for their enjoyment. Despite this, the boxer’s unyielding will and steel will enable him to defend his corner in one of the most terrifying places imaginable until his final release.
The period in Auschwitz is depicted backwards and in black and white (via The Guardian), which may bring to mind Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List” due to the horrible visuals on display. Aside from that, the film follows Haft later in his life after he moves to New York City in 1949 and begins a professional boxing career, even going up against legendary boxer Rocky Marciano.
Haft, on the other hand, is still badly wounded by his previous experiences. Ben Foster has proved in films like “Alpha Dog” and “3:10 to Yuma” that he can conjure a ferociousness suitable of the ring, so it sounds like a challenging job for him.

What remains to be seen is how he will deal with Haft’s emotional turmoil. When “The Survivor” premieres on HBO on April 27, we’ll have to see how he does.
