The plot revolves around two brothers who resolve to rob a bank in order to cover their dying mother’s medical bills and care.

The heist, however, goes wrong, and they end up taking an ambulance while fleeing, hence the title of the film. Things soon become worse when they discover the ambulance is actually carrying a dying patient who is suffering from a heart attack.

What Is the Story of Ambulance About?

“Ambulance” is a remake of Laurits Munch-2005 Petersen’s Danish film of the same name. According to the film’s IMDb website, it was made in strict accordance with three rules.

The three rules are as follows: just one location (an ambulance) could be used, the story had to take place in real time, and only four characters could be depicted in the ambulance.

Munch-Petersen used that foundation to create an 80-minute thrill ride about a pair of crooks who steal an ambulance as a getaway vehicle after their theft goes wrong.

The robbers soon come across an EMT battling to keep a near-dead patient alive in the back of the truck. According to the same December 2020 THR story on Abdul-Mateen II’s casting, “Ambulance” screenwriter Chris Fedak (“Chuck”) rewrote Munch-plot Petersen’s film’s by changing the relationship between the criminal brothers.

More information on the storyline changes was revealed in an August CinemaBlend report. Gyllenhaal and Abdul-Mateen II play estranged pals in the version of “Ambulance.”

When Abdul-Mateen II’s character’s wife becomes unwell, he becomes anxious to obtain the money for life-saving therapy. He tracks down Gyllenhaal’s character, who recruits him for a bank heist that culminates in the two commandeering an ambulance.

The criminals also kidnap González’s character, a paramedic, as well as a near-death patient she is treating.

It’s unknown how strictly Bay will follow the guidelines established by his “Ambulance” predecessor, but the thought of an 80-minute thriller from the king of cinematic mayhem is certainly enticing.
