Gayle King was born in Chevy Chase, Maryland, on December 28, 1954. Peggy, her mother, was a stay-at-home mom, and Scott, her father, was an electrical engineer.

Gayle later returned to the United States and graduated from the University of Maryland with a double major in psychology and sociology in 1976.
She worked at a television station, WTOP-TV, while in college, then was hired as a production assistant at WJZ-TV in Baltimore following graduation.
