Despite a 57 percent drop and the expected challenge from local newcomer “One Week Friends,” “Jurassic World Dominion” held on to the top spot at the mainland China box office.
According to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, the dinosaur franchise film made $23.3 million (RMB156 million) in China between Friday and Sunday, giving it a healthy cumulative score of $92.4 million after ten days in theaters.
The film’s performance was down significantly from its opening weekend, but competition from the new Chinese youth drama “One Week Friends” was weaker than expected.

The film, directed by Gavin Lin of Taiwan and produced by Alibaba Pictures’ Surprise Works unit, is a Chinese adaptation of Hazuki Matcha’s Japanese manga “Isshukan Friends.”
It’s about a lonely female student with memory issues who is befriended by a group of high school students. For many students, the release date was expected to coincide with the start of summer vacation.
After COVID-related cinema closures disrupted the releasing schedule for local films, stronger performances may be expected in the coming weeks as other Chinese titles cautiously make their way into mainland theaters.
On June 24, another drama, “Lighting Up the Stars,” will make its debut. On Sunday, it had a round of previews and finished third in the national charts with less than 1% of available screens.

COVID-related anthology film “Ode to the Spring” will be released on July 1; firefighting action film “Flashover” will be released on July 8; and “Mozart From Space,” a sci-fi comedy from “Detective Chinatown” director Chen Sicheng, will be released on July 15.
Meanwhile, the ever-changing COVID situation, as well as authorities’ zero-tolerance responses, continue to wreak havoc on movie theaters.
While many Beijing cinemas reopened in late May, many have since closed again. The total weekend box office in the United States was $36 million, down 40% from the previous weekend.
China’s total year-to-date exports are estimated to be $2.45 billion, according to Artisan Gateway. This is a 39% decrease from the same period in 2021.
