Early Life of Carlos Santana
On July 20, 1947, Carlos Santana was born in Autlán, Jalisco, Mexico. The young Santana had a passion for music at a very young age, beginning with the violin at the age of five and the guitar (which would later become his hallmark instrument) at the age of eight.
At a time when rock music had not really taken off in Mexico, he initially learned under his father, a musician who played in a Mariachi band, but soon started to study well-known American musicians like Ritchie Valens.
Santana eventually relocated to San Francisco, California, with his family, where his music career really started.
Carlos Santana Career in Music
Carlos Santana is a guitarist and songwriter who has won numerous music honors over his career, including Grammy Awards, Latin Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and too many more to name here.
With his band, Santana, he helped popularize the Latin-fusion sound, which is best characterized as a synthesis of rock, salsa, and jazz in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
But it wasn’t until Santana formed his first band, the Santana Blues Band, in 1966 that he began to draw inspiration from a wide range of musical styles, including jazz greats Miles Davis.
And John Coltrane, psychedelic soul acts like Sly and the Family Stone and Jimi Hendrix, British rock bands the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, and Latin musicians like Tito Puente and Mongo Santamara.
All of these many inspirations combined to create the sound of Santana, who released their debut album with Columbia Records in 1969 under their new, abbreviated name.
Santana’s appearance at the now-famous Woodstock Festival, along with numerous recordings of the event, including the award-winning documentary simply titled Woodstock, greatly contributed to the band’s early popularity and continue to be appreciated by fans of 60s music today.
This came after a few personnel changes that shifted the band toward a more hard rock sound. Over and above Santana’s efforts as a solo artist, the band has recorded a stunning 25 studio albums from 1969 to 2019.
The band’s breakthrough album, Abraxas, was released the next year by Santana. Seven of those solo albums are studio albums, however Santana has chosen to make the majority of his recordings available with his band of the same name.
Over the ensuing decades, he continued to create music that fused rock, jazz, and psychedelia, but in the late 1990s, his album Supernatural, which he released in 1999, became a huge commercial and critical success, selling more than 30 million copies worldwide and more than 15 million in the US alone.
That album reached number one in ten different countries and took home eight Grammys, including Album of the Year.
The album’s biggest hit, however, was a joint effort with the rock band Matchbox 20, which is from an entirely other genre.
The Matchbox 20 and Santana collaboration “Smooth,” which debuted in 1999 and is still heavily played on the radio today, was a huge success.
Santana has firmly established himself as an elder statesman of rock music with the breakthrough of “Smooth,” and he frequently appears on lists of the finest guitarists ever.
He appeared on the American Idol season finals in 2009 alongside great acts like KISS and Queen. Then, in 2014, he released Corazon, his debut album in his mother tongue of Spanish.
