The manner in which Christina Ricci came to understand what it means to be gay is quite Hollywood-esque in nature.
It occurred while the child star was filming Mermaids with Winona Ryder, and Winona Ryder called the child star's then-boyfriend Johnny Depp to explain what had transpired.
During an appearance on Andy Cohen Live on SiriusXM, Ricci related the humorous incident, noting that Depp “is actually the guy who explained to me what homosexuality was when I was 9 years old.”
“Something was going on behind the scenes, and someone was acting rudely toward another cast member as a result. They reacted by saying something along the lines of “oh well, he could be homophobic.”
After that, I thought to myself, “well, I don't understand what that is,” and continued “Wednesday was the day when the Yellow jackets star remembered it.
I was in Winona's trailer when she said, “I don't know how…,” so she placed me on the phone with Johnny. I explained the situation to Winona.
And Johnny was kind enough to elaborate for me.” In 1993, Depp and Ryder, one of the most famous couples in the history of popular culture, put a stop to their romance for good.

When filming of the 1990 movie Mermaids began, the actresses had only recently begun dating one another. Christina Ricci stated that Depp provided her with an explanation of the concept of being gay in “the simplest words.”
“When I asked him what that meant, he said, “It's when a man wants to have sex with another man.” And when a woman wants to have sex with another woman, she said, and I responded, “Oh, okay.”

Additionally, she said. Cohen went on to say, “I bet Johnny Depp did a good job explaining it.” Ricci revealed his thoughts by saying, “Just very matter-of-factly.”
Cohen made a witty remark in response, saying, “I love it that Winona Ryder had to put you on the phone with Johnny Depp to get that tale because she couldn't spit it out in some way, or, I mean, you've got Cher in the next trailer.”

Ricci laughed while saying, “I know we should have run over there.” In the end, Ricci appeared in multiple films alongside Depp, including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Sleepy Hollow, among others.
