Dave Grohl’s Adolescent Years
Grohl was born in Warren, Ohio, on January 14, 1969. Lisa is his older sister. When he was a small child, his family relocated to Springfield, Virginia.

During his junior year of high school, he dropped out. He traveled with the band and contributed to the recording of two studio albums and a few live albums.
While playing drums with Scream, he got friends with Buzz Osborne of the Melvins. Osbourn took Kurt Cobain and Kris Novoselic to watch Scream one night. A few months later, around the time Scream disbanded, Cobain and Novoselic’s band Nirvana was seeking a new drummer.

The band traveled to Sound City Studios in Los Angeles in the spring of 1991 to record “Nevermind” (as documented in Grohl’s 2013 documentary Sound City). When “Nevermind” was launched in 1991, it defied all predictions and became a worldwide economic triumph.
Following Kurt Cobain’s murder and the disbandment of Nirvana in 1994, Dave spent six days making music on his own to distract himself from the agony. He played and recorded all the instruments on the recordings. When he was finished, he made 100 cassette tapes and distributed them to friends.
He did not want his name to appear on those tracks and thus chose the moniker Foo Fighters. One of those tapes wound up in the hands of a Capitol Records executive, who immediately signed Dave, believing the songs were written by a full band.
