What Was the Net Worth of Lee Harvey Oswald? His Military Service!

Lee Harvey Oswald was a United States Marine veteran who assassinated President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Oswald was placed in juvenile detention at the age of 12 for truancy, during which time he was diagnosed as “emotionally disturbed” by a psychiatrist due to a lack of normal family life.

After attending 12 schools in his youth, he quit several times before joining the Marines at the age of 17. While in the Marine Corps, Oswald was twice court-martialed and imprisoned.

He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and transferred to the Marine Corps Reserve before flying to Europe and defecting to the Soviet Union in October 1959.

Early Life of Lee Harvey Oswald

Robert Edward Lee Oswald Sr. and Marguerite Frances Claverie welcomed Oswald into the world on October 18, 1939, in New Orleans, Louisiana; however, his father passed away from a heart attack two months before.

The family was then relocated to Dallas, Texas, where Oswald started first grade in 1945. Oswald was described as withdrawn and moody as a child, frequently changing schools.

His mother once took him to live temporarily in New York, where he was enrolled in seventh grade. Oswald was evaluated by a psychiatrist at a juvenile reformatory as a result of his repeated absences from class.

The psychiatrist identified personality disturbance with schizoid traits in Oswald and blamed his mother’s lack of affection for many of his issues.

Lee Harvey Oswald never finished high school, despite having attended 12 different institutions by the time he made the decision to leave at age 17 in order to join the Marines.

Military Service

One week after turning seventeen, in October 1956, Oswald joined the Marines. At the Naval Air Facility Atsugi, which is close to Tokyo, Japan, he finished his training before being posted to Marine Air Control Squadron 1.

His tenure in the Marines was equally tumultuous because he ran into trouble frequently. On one occasion, he engaged in combat with a sergeant, which resulted in his reduction from private first class to private and a brief period of detention.

Sputnik Union

Oswald learned the fundamentals of Russian while serving in the Marines. He claimed he had to return home to care for his mother while requesting a hardship discharge from the Marines in 1959.

The United States Marine Corps Reserve was then assigned to him. Soon after that, he went to the Soviet Union. He claimed to be a communist and said he wanted to become a Soviet citizen when he arrived.

The Soviet officers resisted him, and his original application for citizenship was turned down. He intentionally hurt himself in order to stay in Russia longer, which resulted in him spending an additional week in a Soviet hospital.

His discharge status was changed to undesirable after he went to the American embassy in Moscow to express his desire to renounce his citizenship.

Oswald was given permission to stay in the Soviet Union, but he was unable to enroll at Moscow State University as he had hoped. Instead, he was assigned to the Gorizont Electronics factory in Minsk, Belarus.

He was granted a free apartment, and with the money he received from the factory, he could live comfortably by Soviet standards. Oswald, however, started to tyre of his existence there and in 1962 he applied at the American embassy to return home.

In June 1961, he left for the United States. Oswald took several jobs after returning to the country, but he struggled to hold any of them steady because he frequently despised his work or did not get along with his supervisor or coworkers. Oswald’s life and ideas deteriorated during the following few years, becoming increasingly disorganized and unpleasant.

He wasn’t charged at the time, but it was later discovered that he was behind the attempted murder of retired U.S. Major General Edwin Walker. Some of Oswald’s friends and associates later confirmed that he disliked Walker because of his vocal anti-Communism.

He was first detained for the murder of Tippit and then charged with killing JFK. Oswald vehemently denied being a party to the crime. Two days later, on live television in the basement of Dallas Police Headquarters, local nightclub owner Jack Ruby shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald.

The Warren Commission decided in September 1964 that Oswald had killed JFK by himself after conducting an inquiry. It was difficult to locate a burial when Oswald passed away, but the Rose Hill Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas, eventually consented.

A rumor that a lookalike Russian agent had actually been interred in Lee Harvey Oswald’s grave appeared in the late 1970s. After the body was exhumed, dental records proved that it was in fact Oswald.

Due to water damage to the original coffin, the remains were interred in a new one. The original coffin was sold to an unidentified bidder for about $88,000 in a private auction held by the funeral parlor that made it in 2010.

However, Oswald’s brother was able to regain the casket by successfully suing the funeral parlor. Today, many conspiracy theories are still based on the JFK assassination, as many Americans do not entirely accept the official account of what happened that investigators have presented.
