The film “La Reina del Sur” is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Spanish author Arturo Pérez-Reverte. It depicts Teresa Mendoza’s (Kate del Castillo) rise in the world of murderous criminals and global drugs trafficking.
Originally, a film starring Eva Mendes was intended for “La Reina del Sur.” However, Pérez-Reverte supported Kate del Castillo’s selection for the role in the final television show.
The 63 episodes of the first season depict Mendoza’s escape after learning that the drug cartels and narcotics enforcers responsible for the death of her pilot boyfriend have captured her.
In an effort to avoid the same fate, the young Mexican woman flees to the south of Spain, where she becomes entangled in the high-stakes drug trade.
She achieves success in the illegal transatlantic business, but at a high personal cost, as a result of cunning partnerships, acute commercial acumen, and determination.
Eight years have passed since the second season’s 60 episodes, which were shot in over 300 locations across the world, were filmed. Before her daughter is kidnapped and she is forced to return to the world of drug trafficking to confront old foes, Mendoza is living a happy and healthy life in Tuscany, Italy, far from the gangland.
