Obi-Wan Kenobi is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe. Obi-Wan is a supporting Jedi Master in the original trilogy and is portrayed by the English actor Alec Guinness.
In the later-released prequel trilogy, Ewan McGregor portrays a younger version of the character, who serves as one of the two main protagonists alongside Anakin Skywalker. This article answers the question, How Old Was Obi-Wan When He Died?
How Old Was Obi Wan When He Died?
The good news, at least from a timeline standpoint, is that Obi-Wan died shortly before the Battle of Yavin, which serves as the canonical Star Wars timeline’s zero-point.
That places his final age firmly in the canon calendar, but anything beyond that is at best speculative. The Topps Star Wars: Card Trader app lists his birth year as 57 BBY, which corresponds to his death year.
However, the canon status of that detail is unknown, though it may be clarified once Obi-Wan Kenobi begins to air. The upcoming Disney+ miniseries has a fixed place in the canon as well.
Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy placed it at “10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith” during the official announcement for the show in 2020.
With that film taking place 19 years before the Battle of Yavin, his exile on Tatooine in Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place 9 years before the Jedi’s death – three distinct time markers to centre the character in the timeline.
The actors’ ages are also useful indicators. Guinness was 63 years old when A New Hope was released in theatres, which roughly corresponds to the Topps app.
McGregor, for one, was 34 when Revenge of the Sith debuted and will turn 51 on March 31, 2022. That’s roughly in line with Obi-stated Wan’s age from Topps, though there’s some wiggle room on either side because actors frequently play roles that are slightly older or younger than their actual age.
Fitting that into the timeline dates gives the character a fairly firm age at each stage of his appearance. Counting backward, he dies in his late fifties or early sixties, while the events of Obi-Wan Kenobi occur in his early fifties.
In his early thirties, he goes into exile, and the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace begin in his early to mid-twenties. That is within a few years of matching both the actors’ ages and the timeline dates and can be used to get a rough idea of where the character’s given appearance falls in the timeline.

Kenobi’s case is also intriguing for a far less technical reason. He’s a strange forerunner of the saga’s periodic time jumps back and forth. But, while most of the other characters are either dead or aliens with long lives, Obi-Wan is the human face of the Star Wars universe’s changing eras.
The creators have placed him with great care, and while the various pieces don’t perfectly fit, they all get close enough to paint a reasonably accurate picture of his age when he dies.
