Who Was Saint Timothy?

Tradition holds that Timothy or Timothy of Ephesus was an early Christian evangelist and the first Christian bishop of Ephesus and that he died around the year 97 A.D.

Timothy was from the Lycaonian city of Lystra or Derbe in Asia Minor. He was born to a Jewish mother who had converted to Christianity and a Greek father.

Paul met him during his second missionary journey, and he and Silas became Paul’s companion and missionary partner. According to the New Testament, Timothy travelled with the apostle Paul, who was also his mentor.

The First and Second Epistles to Timothy are addressed to Timothy. Even though they are included in the Pauline epistles of the New Testament, many biblical scholars consider the First and Second Timothy to be pseudepigraphical and not written by Paul.

Timothy was born in Lystra or Derbe, Lycaonia (Anatolia). When Paul and Barnabas first visited Lystra, he healed a person born with a crippling condition, which led many of the locals to accept his teaching.

Timothy was already a respected member of the Christian congregation when he returned with Silas a few years later, along with his Jewish grandmother Lois and Jewish mother Eunice.

How Old Was Timothy in the Bible?

Paul sent the Epistle to the Romans during the winter of 57–58, while Timothy was in Corinth with Paul. According to Acts 20:3–6, Timothy was with Paul in Macedonia just before Passover in 58; he left the city ahead of Paul and travelled to Troas to wait for Paul.

Raymond Brown notes that this is the final mention of Timothy in the Book of Acts. In the year 64, Paul left Timothy to govern the church at Ephesus.

He had a close relationship with Paul. On 2 Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, and Philemon, Timothy is listed as a co-author. Paul told the Philippians of Timothy, “I have no one comparable to him.”

When Paul was imprisoned and awaiting his execution, he summoned his loyal friend Timothy for a final farewell. The writer of Hebrews implies that Timothy was imprisoned at least once during the time period of the writing of the New Testament by mentioning Timothy’s release at the end of the letter.

Although not mentioned in the New Testament, the apostle’s death is documented in other sources. According to the apocryphal Acts of Timothy, the 80-year-old bishop attempted to halt a procession honouring the goddess Diana by preaching the Gospel in the year 97 A.D.

He was beaten, dragged through the streets, and stoned to death by the pagan mob.
