From the first scene of this eight-part series, it’s clear that it’s a little better than other shows of the same time. It looks a little more expensive, has a bit more atmosphere, builds its world in a more economical way, and has more than a few surprises.

And it doesn’t care much about any of this. It has a confident, easygoing, and very British charm that could border on pretentiousness if it weren’t so well written.

As things stand, though, it’s happy to be better than any number of similar shows without telling you, since it’s certain you’ll figure it out on your own.
