Some of the world’s most famous people are often buried in places with large monuments and memorials. But there are also a lot of famous people whose graves aren’t marked and whose contributions to society seem to have been forgotten.
We talk about some of these famous people and show where they are buried in this article.
Table of Contents
1. Marilyn Monroe
One of Hollywood’s most iconic actresses, Marilyn Monroe untimely death in 1962 shocked the world. Despite her fame, she was buried in an unmarked grave at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
Monroe’s grave was unmarked for over 20 years until a fan donated a plaque with the words “Marilyn Monroe 1926-1962” in 1982.
2. Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix was a legendary guitarist who revolutionized the music industry with his innovative style. Despite his fame, Hendrix was buried in an unmarked grave in Renton, Washington, after his death in 1970. It wasn’t until 1991, over two decades after his death, that a proper headstone was erected.
3. John Belushi
John Belushi is best known for his role in the 1980 classic film The Blues Brothers. He was also known for going out and partying hard. Fans often went to his grave at Abel Hill Cemetery in Chilmark, Massachusetts, after he died to pay their respects and have a drink “with him.”
Most people think that Belushi’s body is still at Abel Hill Cemetery, even though the headstone has been moved to a different part of the cemetery. But only his family knows where exactly he is buried.
The famous actor from Hollywood, who was particularly famous for his roles in Westerns and war movies, passed away in 1979. However, it was not until 1998, almost 20 years later, that his grave was finally marked. Those who want to pay their respects to John Wayne can visit his grave at Pacific View Memorial Park, located in Newport Beach, California.
5. Adolf Hitler
Many people believe that it’s a positive thing that there is no marked tomb for Hitler. However, from a historical perspective and to prevent conspiracy theories that he might have escaped Germany, it could be argued that having a known burial site could be beneficial.
It has been reported that Hitler and his partner Eva Braun’s remains were burned, buried, and moved multiple times. Eventually, their bones were exhumed and cremated, making it impossible to locate any trace of the dictator anywhere on Earth.
6. Roy Orbison
singer of “Oh, Pretty Woman” passed away due to a heart attack at the age of 52 and was laid to rest in a cemetery in Los Angeles. However, his family had always intended this to be a temporary arrangement, which is why they never installed a tombstone at his graveside. Orbison’s final resting place is at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park, a cemetery where many other deceased celebrities have also been interred.
Despite this, Orbison’s grave remains unmarked. According to his son, Alex, this is not intentional, and they have simply not had the chance to mark it. “It’s definitely not intentional. It’s not like we don’t want people going by there or whatever. It’s been put on the back burner for so long,” he explained.
7. Frank Zappa
Like Orbison and other famous people, the well-known musician was buried at Westwood Memorial in Los Angeles. His grave is also unmarked, just like Orbison’s. While it is unclear why Zappa’s grave was left unmarked, in an interview, he expressed that being remembered was not important to him.
When asked about his legacy, the musician replied, “It’s not important to even be remembered.”
